The University won Best Large Event at last night’s Wrexham Tourism Awards, holding off competition from Wales Comic Con, FOCUS Wales and Underneath the Arches, among others.

The gig was the first held at the Racecourse Stadium for 34 years, with more than 20,000 watching the Welsh rockers play hits including Dakota, Traffic, and Local Boy in the Photograph.

They were supported by Llandudno favourites Catfish and the Bottlemen, Pretty Vicious, and The Ramona Flowers.

Receiving the award, Director of Operations Lynda Powell said: “I would like to thank all of the team for their hard work, including our partners VMS Live.

“This is a huge honour for the University and everyone involved in organising the concert, which was a massive success and well-received by both the community and music-goers from across the country and beyond.”

Lynda added: “Bringing this landmark concert to Wrexham took a lot of time and effort from VMS Live and ourselves, so we are thrilled that has been recognised.”

Held at Chirk Castle, the prize-giving was coordinated by Wrexham’s Destination Management Partnership and celebrated the achievements of Wrexham’s tourism industry – including the best visitor attraction, best restaurant/cafe and rising star.

On the night, Techniquest Glyndwr was also up for an award for Best Use of Social Media.
