Chester and Wrexham have united to encourage Channel 4 to set up its new headquarters in a unique proposal straddling the English-Welsh border.

Channel 4 will set up three bases around the UK, one being its HQ and two further creative hubs. Wrexham Glyndŵr University is supporting the bid, which is being led by Cheshire West & Chester Council and Wrexham County Borough Council, along with MPs, businesses and the wider community on both sides of the border.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Maria Hinfelaar, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the bid for Channel 4 to come to the English-Welsh border. Wrexham Glyndŵr provides excellent education specialism in the region within our School of Creative Arts and Centre for the Creative Industries – we are a dynamic and forward-looking region. Many of our graduates have set up their own businesses in the creative sector, and this is exactly what Channel 4 is looking for because their model is to commission work externally.”

The £5m Centre for Creative Industries at WrexhamGlyndŵr University is home to Calon FM, a community radio station with an FM licence, and students also gain experience working on – an online channel covering live sessions from local artists.

The centre supports courses in art, music, journalism, media, TV, film and theatre and has become home to BBC Cymru Wales in North East Wales, providing new production facilities for its staff, guests and contributors.

The University also has a performing arts space, the Terry Hands Studio, as well as recording facilities, television production facilities, animation labs and more.

Professor Hinfelaar added: “This bid is built on the close relationships developed between councils, universities, MPs, businesses and the wider community on both sides of the border and we’re optimistic that Channel 4 will consider this unique offering.”
