about picsCalon FM is Wrexham’s own Award Winning community radio station. Since March 2008 the station has built up its schedule to offer a wide range of shows for all tastes. We believe community radio is an invaluable platform for people in Wrexham to have their voices heard.

“Calon FM serves its audience well with its clever use of language and colorful story telling. This is a station with a strong and impressive range of bilingual output from arts through to politics, and some really strong presenters. The station is very accessible, stays fun throughout and fulfils one of the best yet simplest straplines – uniting the community. Truly local and interactive, it offers a great service to the area on a budget.” (Radio Academy, 2013)

The philosophy of Calon FM is to provide a channel to encourage and facilitate the empowerment, life long learning, development and generation of our community, regardless of race, gender, age or disability – everyone is welcome!  There’s absolutely no experience necessary to get involved – whether you’re an aspiring radio presenter, or just fancy trying something different we offer free training in all aspects of radio production and broadcasting.

We work with over 80 regular volunteers who do everything from present their own show, to helping out behind the scenes on production, research and fund-raising! All of our shows are inspired by the interests of the Wrexham community, covering everything from local interest news, music, film, arts and sport. We even have shows dedicated to local sports teams Wrexham FC and North Wales Crusaders!

We broadcast 24/7 across Wrexham on 105fm and we also have listeners from all across North Wales, the UK and abroad online – simply click on the link!

In April 2014 as part of our work with local arts organisations, we teamed up with local festival Focus Wales for a ’12 hour Takeover’. 10 acts from 2014’s festival lineup performed sessions for us which were broadcast live over a 12 hour special show.

In November 2013 we were delighted to be awarded the Radio Academy Nations & Regions Award for the Best Station in Wales (with listenership of under 300,000). This is testament to the hard work of all of our volunteers and what their shows offer the Wrexham community.

In April 2013, two 16 year old volunteer presenters impressively stayed awake for 53 hours, with the help of over 20 local guests from musicians, and Djs to magicians and personal trainers and all to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. They battled tiredness and delirium to raise over £1500 for the charity.

In 2009, we were nominated for a Times Higher Education with Glyndwr University for our work within the community sporting local schools and charities, particularly recording a Christmas CD of local school choirs which was sold to raise money for Nightingale House Hospice.

Calon FM is a voluntary organisation. With only 2 paid staff members, we rely on the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. We’re run through grants, funding and sponsorship.

Calon FM is YOUR community station – get involved, volunteer, have your say!
